Counter-Strike was one of the first multi-player team-based realistic FPS and games like Call of Duty: Modern Warfare and Battlefield 2 is based on that. Being a realistic shooter in 1999, this was the first time the recoil of a weapon factored into the game. So there had to be a to way to shoot accurately. In real life, one shoots more accurately when they are still. But in gaming, precision mouses make that an unwise move for the most part.

Enter the shimmy. This is done by strafing left and right repeatedly while keep your aim at the targets. This makes shooting practitioners of this FPS dance move more difficult. Even the shortest strafe will make things difficult due to, from the opponent’s perspective, instantaneous shifting of the target back and forth.

In the 10 years (10 years!) since Counter-strike, the WASD system of movement has changed very little, so it remains a popular tactic among FPS games. In real life, I have yet to see anyone shoot accurately while shaking their hips back and forth. And yet in gaming, I am still astound getting shot by someone doing a belly dance. It’s a move embedded into every gamer since Counter-strike, even I found myself abusing it.

To me, even if the games looked prettier today than 10 years ago, FPS as we know it hasn’t changed much. That annoys me.

Bonus Peeve: Another Counter-Strike relic is the Desert Eagle. It’s in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare even though no military adopted it due to its impracticality. Plus, they must have super strong wrists since they can also empty the entire 7 round clip in a few seconds. If Call of Duty wants to take from Counter-Strike, why not the Glock? The handgun used by oh… everyone.

Lyrically, they are typical “the world sucks. if only people listen to me” bs. Musically, however, they are so talented that I could care less about their politics. I believe I should separate the message from the message machine (though the musicians who write these songs may object).

If they rock, I will rock to their tune. Flobots most definitely rock.

(Cross-posted in Are You NKay?, my blog on North Korean Human Rights. Email me if you would like to contribute.)

I just went to Starbuck and learned that the purchase of my Expresso Truffle sent $.05 to (RED). I take no issue of corporations taking part of charitable courses. Having taken part in non-profit organizations, any help is appreciated. But I cannot help but notice that it is a ploy to steer people towards certain high-end products.

My expresso, like almost every Starbucks coffees, tasted like a combination of burning and sweetness. It also costs $3.65 for a Tall (small in Starbuckese).

Dell’s Product (RED) steers me towards their high end XPS desktops and their mid-range Studio 15 and Studio 17 Laptops (which has a 75 premium for some pretty cool designs). I’m pretty sure I won’t be getting a Product (RED) Mini9 anytime soon.

It’s like corporations are putting the onus on their customers to help, (RED)’s case, HIV victims in Africa. What if we don’t buy Product (RED)? Will they not send the money?

I reiterate. Whatever it takes to get money to worthy causes is okay in my book. But it would be nice for corporation to use cheaper high-volume products.

The styling of the miniblog navigation between the main nav and the search bar turned out to be more complicated than I thought. So here’s how I pulled it off.

The markup is simple enough

twitter /

tumblr /

flickr /

my profile...r

The CSS is a bit more complicated, but easily explainable

#miniblog {
position:absolute;
right:20px;
top:96px;
padding:0;
margin:0;
}

#miniblog .miniblog {
display:block;
position:absolute;
top:0;
left:-28px;
background:url(images/miniblog.png) no-repeat 100% -32px;
height:32px;
width:95px;
}

#miniblog .miniblog:hover {
background-position:100% 0;
}

#miniblog .miniblog a {
height:19px;
width:95px;
margin:0 10px 0 0;
display:block;
}

#miniblog li {
display:inline-block;
font-size:15px;
line-height:21px;
position:relative;
top:15px;
}

#miniblog li a {
font-size:11px;
font-style:italic;
}

The two keys is to make the set the “miniblog” link as an absolute positioned element. Then the rest of the link will overlay on top of it and be clickable. Then I do a bit of positioning and inline-blocking to make it the way it looks right now.

I consider this part one because I will be doing a bit of jQuery on it to make it the navigation more dynamic. A web developer’s personal site is never finished…

In my opinion, Modern Warfare is still a superior game to the newer World at War. Still, whenever patch 1.8 comes out, I think COD4 could be improved with these features from WaW.

Toss back perk. It is because of this perk I love martyrdom used by my opponents. In World at War it is essentially a free pre-cooked grenade. This perk would solve the martyrdom menace in Modern Warfare.

Improved score sheet. The new score sheet shows artillery kills, dog kills, and a rival. It’s simply a great improvement over the old score sheet.

Bayonet. Why not? Bayonets are still currently used in many weapons, as recent as 2006 in Iraq. It’s a great counter to the ninja knives currently in both games.

Capture the flag. This was omitted in Modern Warfare. It’s better than Domination in my opinion.

Prestige Mode. Yes, Modern Warfare has it in it console versions, but why not in the PC version? As much I enjoy using a golden AK-47, I think its time to distinguish the men from the boy (or at least, regular people to people who play too much).

Bonus

Make the stun grenade work like tabun gas. I’ve already covered this in a previous post, but I want it changed just because I really hate the current stun grenade.

category_nicename . '/" class="' . $category->category_nicename . '">'
. $category->cat_name . '';} ?>

I tried to add keep the word “filed under” in the span tag for accessibility reasons but alas, there was an IE issue with that. Here’s the css for the “webdev” category.

#content .category a {
display:inline-block;
margin:0 0 0 5px;
vertical-align:middle;
}

#content .category {
text-transform:uppercase;
letter-spacing:1px;
margin:5px 0;
}

#content .category span {
display:inline-block;
height:42px;
background:url(images/category.png) no-repeat;
width:56px;
vertical-align:middle;
}

#content .webdev {
text-indent:-9999px;
background:url(images/cat_webdev.png) no-repeat;
width:107px;
height:21px;
}

Simply put, I made the “cat” and the “category icon” elements inline-blocks and had them vertically align together in the middle.

Of course, you could always use floats instead of inline-block. But I think they are a pain in the ass. Because floated elements cannot be vertically aligned, I would have to adjust the padding for each icon depending its height.

display:inline-block ftw once again.

And to think we were one conference away from a BCS bowl instead of crappy bowl in the middle of nowhere. Oh well, considering how much we suxored the first half of the season, I’ll take 8-5.

So what will be next year like for Rutgers Football? We’ll need to replace Teel, hopefully someone that is way more consistent. I’d say Dom Natale, since I have yet to see Jabu Lovelace to throw accurately.

In running back, I’d say do something similar to the Giants. Young and Martinek for yardage, Brooks as a bruiser. Whoever it is, thank god the entire O-line will be back.

For someone who thought this year was going to be a rebuilding year, I really think we can win the Big East for real this time.

I am not exactly the Nintendo Wii’s target demographic, but I had more fun playing LBP with three other people than any Wii multiplayer game I’ve played, including the Raving Rabbids Series, Wii Sports, and Warioware.

Why? Because a combination of a PS3 powered 2D platformer and the use of sock figures made it the funniest game I’ve ever played. Not even Warioware made me laugh as hard as going through the complex levels.

If you play this game, four player is a must, preferably with people sitting next to you. You will get a PS3 for this game even if GT5 never comes out.
