Outdated, high barrier of entry, and will last forever.
Way back in high school, Counter-strike was my game of choice. Back then it was just a Half-Life mod. Then it became one of the most popular PC shooters in the world. After making an impulse buy on steam, I went back in this world. Here’s what I found.
Plenty of servers. Most suck. First server I went to had a hacker no one can ban. Second server had a grief no one can ban. Third server had a person spewing racist bile no one can ban. I find too easy for someone to ruin the gaming experience in CS:S.
Headshots galore. CS has been around for almost 10 years and there are people likely to have played that game for that long. So in every match its a good chance most people will be gunning for your face.
de_dust2 all night long. By now there is a massive collection of official maps and an even more massive custom maps scene. So why did I end up in 3 servers that only played de_dust2? Yes there were other servers, but the ones with the low ping all play de_dust2. Besides, I am a de_dust man.
It’s old. Time to move on. I’ve said in a previous post how FPS gameplay has barely changed in 10 years. Well, that’s not exactly accurate. Playing CS requires a different skill set than Halo or Call of Duty. I certainly no longer have the skill set. Maybe I should have a look at Rainbow Six: Vegas 2
Here’s to another 10 years of CS. There hasn’t been a true successor to CS. Valve has tried many things to advance the series and have failed for the most part. Casual gamers don’t like FPS and hardcore players demand complexity in their games. So while I’ve moved on, a lot of people will still be playing CS.
