Why did I just spend the first day of the New Year having dinner with a bunch of old Chinese couples and then went to one their houses for coffee and cake?

Easy, 利是逗來, yo.

It is common during Chinese New Year for the elderly and married folks to pass out red envelopes to children and unmarried folks. Red envelopes are meant to stop evil spirits from taking over. But really, red envelopes have money inside. Knowing my parent’s friends, they got big denominations if you know what I mean.

So you’re damn right I’m going to show up, laugh at their jokes, and help pour their tea and wine. You should always respect your elders. This CNY, do your best to remind them to put you on their shortlist for red envelopes.
